Abstract :

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) are beneficial soil bacteria that colonize the plant rhizosphere and play a pivotal role in sustainable agriculture. With the extensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides causing significant harm to ecosystems, PGPR present a promising eco-friendly alternative. These bacteria enhance plant growth through direct and indirect mechanisms. Direct benefits include biological nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization, and the production of phytohormones, which collectively improve nutrient availability and stimulate development. Indirectly, PGPR act as biocontrol agents by suppressing phytopathogens through competition and antibiotic production, thereby inducing systemic resistance in plants. They also enhance a plant's resilience to abiotic stresses like drought and salinity. The application of PGPR as biofertilizers and biopesticides can lead to reduced reliance on agrochemicals, improved soil fertility, and increased crop yields. Furthermore, advanced approaches involve designing synthetic microbial consortia, leveraging omics technologies to create robust, multi-functional bacterial communities tailored for specific agricultural needs. Despite challenges in commercialization and consistency under field conditions, the strategic use of PGPR holds immense potential for revolutionizing agricultural practices. This review outlines the mechanisms, applications, and significance of PGPR, emphasizing their crucial contribution to developing productive and environmentally responsible farming systems for long-term food security.
